Monday the 1st of May, is the most anticipated day of the year in the fashion industry, and this year Karl Lagerfeld was the shining muse of all those who attended the Met Gala and to be honest we aren’t upset about it at all! When we heard that the theme was ‘Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty,’ we knew we were in for a treat. We eagerly expected vintage Chanel and of course, we were not disappointed.
From Karl’s history of being the creative director of Chanel, and his iconic notion of ending his Haute Couture runway shows with a Chanel Bride (rightly so!) we knew that a few of the A-list celebrities that attended would be embodying the Chanel Bride. Wedding bells to our ears!
Some celebrities chose to portray Karl’s Lagerfeld beloved furry friend ‘Choupette’ which was right on theme, while others channelled their inner Chanel. Everything came together to create the best red carpet looks of 2023 that we’ve seen so far. Here are some of the most gorgeous wedding inspired gowns that might just inspire you!
Doja Cat in Oscar de la Renta
Now we know this might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but we love how this Oscar de la Renta gown is giving ‘Kitty Couture.’ The mermaid style gown was paired with a diamond headpiece and crystal cat ears, giving a soft ambience to the gown. The feather train and the open back, is just wow, or we should say, meow!
Keke Palmer in Sergio Hudson
This strapless Sergio Hudson gown is something more chic and cool, while featuring Karl’s signature Chanel fabric, tweed, paired with a subtle ‘something blue’ cape that doubled as a train; a symbolic and effective look. We love how gentle touches of colour are making their way onto the carpet!
Nicola Peltz Beckham in Valentino
This flowy strapless gown in a feather light style is perfect for a spring or summer wedding. The added bow and long train is a small unique simple touch that is oh so beautiful!
Elle Fanning in Vivienne Westwood
This stunning lace gown by Vivienne Westwood is giving us major boho bride energy! Paired with a daisy crown, it creates a dreamy, soft and demure look. And let’s not forget about the Chanel inspired cropped jacket and matching daisy bouquet; it’s got a subtle fairy aesthetic that we love!
Nicole Kidman in Vintage Chanel
This Karl Lagerfeld-era Chanel Haute Couture gown from 2004 is a jaw dropping masterpiece. Nicole also wore this gown for an iconic Chanel No.5 commercial, it’s made of pink silk tulle (complete with a four-meter train in circumference) and embroidered with 250 pink ostrich feathers as well as over 3,000 silver crystals and sequins. This is a beautiful gown like no other. The soft pink hues are bang on trend for the Spring 2023 bride so hats off to Nicole!
Penélope Cruz in Vintage Chanel
This ball gown is from Chanel Couture’s Spring/Summer 1988 collection. Between the white pearl buttons, full ball gown skirt, and silver sequin embellishments, this gown definitely turned a few heads. The vintage hooded ensemble reminds us of little red riding hood, it captured the Vintage Chanel moment perfectly.
Dua Lipa in Vintage Chanel
This stunning vintage white ball gown is from Chanel’s 1992 Haute Couture collection. It features a drop, scoop-neck waistline and pockets. We love a gown with pockets! The trimmed tassels are a delicate touch that is ideal for any bride who appreciates exquisite baroque style.
We hope that these Met Gala looks inspired you as much as they inspired us. In the words of Karl Lagerfeld, “Fashion is a language that creates itself in clothes to interpret reality.”
The reality is that his unique language created a beautiful world for all of us that appreciate fashion!
